Introduction

Disasters and the rise in extreme weather events present significant challenges for not-for-profit organisations, particularly in managing their workforces.

While navigating the cumulative effects of disasters, not-for-profit organisations must continue to comply with a mix of state and federal laws that are often not designed with not-for-profits in mind.

To help not-for-profit organisations navigate issues that arise during disasters, we have developed practical legal resources that consider:

  • workplace health and safety: managing worker safety in hazardous conditions, such as extreme heat
  • Fair Work and other employment laws: managing workforce availability, leave entitlements, and workplace relations
  • emergency response and volunteer management: mobilising volunteer teams safely and managing spontaneous volunteers
  • remote work: supporting remote work arrangements and related legal issues
  • risk management: evacuation planning and orders to evacuate

Use these resources to help you:

  • identify legal workplace issues that may affect your not-for-profit organisation in times of disasters
  • navigate the information, practices and legislation you need to know to manage these issues, and
  • take action to ensure a safe workplace, protect your employees and volunteers, and improve your organisation's disaster risk management practices
