Campaigns or protests

Relevant laws to consider

Before your organisation starts a campaign or protest, take some time to understand the laws that might apply to your activities.

The relevant laws to consider include:

  • defamation laws - to make sure you are not liable for defaming someone during your campaign or protest
  • safety laws - to make sure that everyone involved is safe and understands the laws that apply, and
  • council or city regulations about large public gatherings or activities that may disrupt traffic or public transport
  • criminal law – to make sure you or the other people taking part in the protest are not inadvertently guilty of a criminal offence

Select the state or territory below where your organisation is based to read the relevant information on organising protests and demonstrations.

Also see our webpage on holding events, which covers legal issues to consider when holding an event for each state and territory, including checklists.
